AI hype says it will run your entire marketing department. Reality is a lot more useful and a lot more limited than that, and this episode breaks down exactly where the line sits for plumbers, electricians, HVAC pros, locksmiths, and every other trades business owner.

Tradesfluence: Somebody is going to tell you AI is about to run your entire marketing department for you. That is not how this works. But here is the thing, that does not mean AI is useless for a trades business either. It just means the hype and the reality are two different trucks parked in two different lots. Today I want to walk you through exactly where AI actually helps a plumber, an electrician, an HVAC company, a locksmith, anybody running a service business, and where it still needs a human hand on the wheel. No magic, no fairy dust, just a plain split between what to hand off and what to keep for yourself.
Tradesfluence: Here is how I want you to think about AI. It is a fast assistant, not a replacement marketer. It is good at speed and it is good at drafts. Keep that split in your head, assistant for speed, not a stand in for judgment, and everything else I tell you today is going to make a lot more sense. Let's get into where it actually earns its keep.
Tradesfluence: First clear win, an AI chat assistant sitting on your website. Think about who is actually looking you up at ten at night. They are searching right now. An AI chat tool can answer basic questions, give your service area, give your hours, and grab a name and a number so somebody on your team can follow up first thing in the morning. It is not replacing a real phone call with your dispatcher. It is just keeping the door open when there is literally nobody there to answer it. If you run a locksmith business or you do appliance repair, where a real chunk of your calls come in outside normal hours anyway, this is not a nice to have, it is filling an actual gap. Without it, that visitor just closes the tab and calls the next name on the list. With it, you at least get a name and a number to work with.
Tradesfluence: Second spot, content drafts. AI can take a real bite out of that. It can give you an outline fast, a rough paragraph structure, a starting point for a page about water heater repair or EV charger installs. That part is genuinely useful. Here is where it falls apart if you let it run on its own. A generic AI draft about appliance repair is going to talk about quality and reliability in that soft, nothing kind of way. It will not know that your customers search by brand and by symptom. That detail only comes from a person who actually understands the trade. So the draft is a starting point, not a finished product. It needs a real edit with real local detail before it ever goes live. Copy and paste is how you end up with a page that reads like every other page on the internet, and that is not doing you any favors.
Tradesfluence: AI tools built into that system can trigger a review request text or email automatically once a job gets marked complete. That automated follow up matters because a lot of business just gets lost to nobody circling back. Think about a tech who wraps six jobs in a single day. Letting a system handle that first nudge, while a real person still reads and responds to anything that needs an actual answer, is a smart, practical use of AI. Google and other platforms do not allow that kind of incentive, and honestly you do not need it. You just need somebody, or something, actually asking.
Tradesfluence: Now let's talk about where AI genuinely does not know what it is talking about. It does not know your trade the way you do. It does not know your town, your competitors, or the specific jobs keeping your phone ringing this particular season. It cannot look at a finished bathroom remodel and write about it the way someone who was actually standing in that bathroom can. It also cannot make the judgment calls that matter most, pricing, scheduling, deciding which lead is actually worth chasing down and which one is a tire kicker. There is another piece of this worth knowing. Google has been clear that thin, mass produced content built mainly to try and game search results, sometimes called doorway pages, is something they actively discourage. If you dump AI content onto your site with zero editing and zero local detail, you can drift right into that territory without meaning to. The fix is not complicated. Use AI for the first draft and the repetitive grunt work. Keep a real person reviewing anything that goes public under your business name, especially anything about pricing or promises.
Tradesfluence: So if you are trying to figure out where to actually bring AI into your own marketing, here is the short version. Start small. Let it answer the basic stuff after hours on your website so you are not losing that ten o'clock visitor. Let it draft rough content you can edit before it ever goes live, outlines and structure, not the final word. Let it handle the routine review requests and the follow up nudges so nothing falls through the cracks just because everybody was slammed that day. And through all of it, keep a real person checking anything that represents your business publicly. That is the whole system. AI as one more tool in the truck, not a replacement for the judgment you built running this business in the first place. We run our own content this same way, by the way. We use AI for chat tools, for first drafts, for follow up, the same spots I just walked you through. But we pair every bit of it with people who actually edit the work and know the trades, instead of letting a tool run unsupervised and hoping for the best.
Tradesfluence: That is the real shape of AI for a trades business right now. Useful in specific spots, not a replacement for you or your team's judgment. If you want somebody to actually set this up right for your business, the chat tool, the drafts that get properly edited with real local detail, the follow up that does not let leads go cold, that is literally what we do every day.
